The Island of Seili
THE ISLAND OF SEILI
EXCURSIONS FROM NAUVO TO SEILI
The naturally beatiful island of Seili is six kilometres away from Nauvo centre and is one of the most attractive places to visit. The history of the island begun already in 1619, when the king Gustav II Adolf ordered to find a suitable spot outside of Turku to put people with lepracy and mental problems. The patients had to bring the wood for their own coffins upon arrival, and once you were there you could not leave. As from 1889 the only patients were women. The mental institution was shut down in 1962 and these days the Archipelago Research Institute is working in the facilities.
In the summer 2016 we will be organizing guided tours (in Finnish or Swedish; English-speaking guide as special arrangement in advance) from Nauvo to Seili. The excursion takes 3 hours, during which we get to know the islands history and church museum. The ferry, Östern, makes the trip both ways.
Prices, timetables and depature dates will be updated in the spring of 2016!
